Arenal Volcano Hike

It took an Uber ride and a very roundabout route to get there. I wouldn’t try to walk there, the distance looks close but the road winds around and it is about a 15 minute drive.

This was the nice Sunday afternoon type of hiking. Not the “question your life choices halfway up a mountain” kind. More what I call outdoor walking. No treacherous terrain. No scrambling over rocks. No dramatic elevation gain. Just well-maintained paths winding through lush greenery, the kind of place where you can actually look around instead of staring at your feet trying not to trip.

The trails were clearly marked, which immediately lowers the stress level. You don’t need to guess. You don’t need to debate which fork looks more promising. You just follow the signs and let the place unfold.

We chose the long route so we could see all three waterfalls. It had rained the night before – perfect timing. Waterfalls are wildly underwhelming when they’re dry, and we got lucky. Each one was flowing!

The best part of this kind of walk is the space it gives you to notice things. Movement in the trees. Birds darting overhead. The occasional rustle in the brush that makes you pause. It’s a reminder that you’re in someone else’s habitat. You don’t need dramatic landscapes for it to feel adventurous – sometimes it’s enough just to slow down and pay attention.

It wasn’t extreme. It wasn’t adrenaline-fueled. But it was exactly what the day called for: fresh air, steady movement, flowing waterfalls, and the simple luxury of wandering through a place that feels untouched.

Sometimes “outdoor walking” is more than enough.
