Deciding where to go in Norway was really really tough. I only had 5 days total to visit the Scandinavian countries so there was only going to be one with an extended stay. I chose Norway.
I was still hesitant, everyone kept saying “You can’t go without seeing the Fjords” and to be honest It didn’t seem exciting to me. I love nature and all, but I didn’t think it was my scene. BOY WAS I WRONG!
Once I committed to fjording in Norway, my next tough decision was ‘where’. There were a number of different places you could go – each with their own benefits and challenges. I ultimately was looking for the place where the fjords were the closest without giving up on overall ‘wow’ factor, and a cute area. Since snow was expected, I decided not to go farther north to catch northern lights because it would be cloudy.
I flew into Bergen, which is the absolute cutest small town. Their waterfront colorful row houses are actually what the famous images come from!! I stayed in a $40/night hostel because it was walking distance to the square and I had a private room. Absolute perfection!
I booked a tour that hit a few of the stops. It was twice the cost of renting a car, but I didn’t want to drive in the snow by myself. I’ve found some luck using Viator and booked their viewpoint cruise. 5 Stars! The bus was comfortable and warm, there were multiple stops along the way hitting even more than I thought we would, AND did an electric ferry on an actual fjord!!
When I got on the ferry I looked up and thought ‘wow’ and then we turned the corner to the ACTUAL view and when I say I was overwhelmed…. I mean I cried. I actually cried tears of joy because the enormity of the beauty was too much to take in at once.
I grabbed a glass (actual fancy glass) of champagne to walk out and enjoy the view and grab a photo. Probably my favorite one from the whole trip. Bundled up in head to toe black (my uniform) sipping champagne from a fancy glass. I even got a fantastic long black dress shot – and it….was…..cold!!!
There were other cool parts about Norway – the number of times Tom Cruise came here to film stunts for movies, the skydiving activities in Voss….. all wonderful things I’d like to come back and see one day. But what will hold it’s place in my memory is that fjord. It was majestic and one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen!
