Bonneville Salt Flats

around 0100 in the wee hours of the morning (is it morning or still night at that time?) I had the bright idea to wake up at 0400 and drive to the Bonneville Salt Flats to catch sunrise. Weather check, directions (2 hours), cameras charged, dresses packed, alarms set.

I’m not kidding when I felt I was racing the sun this morning! I could see the dim light creeping across the sky working to catch up to me in my rental car as I raced across I-80 trying to get in place before sunrise. I was driving down the final pass when I saw the sun peeking up over the horizon. I raced across the flats to an open area (it’s all open) at 0632. Luckily nobody was flashed when I switched outfits to put on my ‘very me’ classic black dress for some photos. I ripped off my shoes and my toesies burned with cold on the salt flats (yes, actually salt).

GoPro, tripod, and iPhone set up – a quick shake out of the braids in my hair and I was ready to tackle these photos.

The sun, the blue skies, perfect clouds, and slight breeze made getting the perfect photos super easy. I’ve spent years capturing thousands of photos to others so it still feels wierd to be the center focus, but boy do I love getting just the right angle on the shot. I found myself giving directions under my breath: ‘stand up straight, look over your shoulder – just past the camera, deep breath… now exhale and twist slowly towards the camera. GOT IT! That’s a wrap!

I highly recommend waking up in the middle of the night to get out there for sunrise. The view is unbeatable!
