First things first — ‘OO-shuh-why-uh”
Most people that are making the trek to Antarctica will find themselves in Ushuaia. It’s the southernmost tip of Argentina, and really – South America – and where a majority of the cruise ships port to the ‘7th Continent’. I arrived a day early, more so to make sure I had extra time in case of flight issues, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Ushuaia. I wish I had given myself another day or two to explore!
The town reminded me of any adorable ski town, but if that ski town was in Switzerland. Every sport, adventure, athletic type brand of store was there for any gear or clothing you could ever need. It’s a great place to do a little gear-shopping (which I did, obviously).
The restaurants and cafes were all over the place, filled with clouded windows from the warmth inside. A few little bakeries and coffee shops, but the places with lines out the front and down the street were the ones with fresh crabs. That’s where you wanted to wait for the restaurant to open, because once they sold out of crabs, you were out of luck until the next day.
…I went twice! And I got a full crab all to myself. They serve it up with scissors and a fork and you could have at it. It was incredible. A full crab and a bottle of wine to accompany it was around $130. Like I said — I went back the next day 😉
It was just a cute little town to walk around and relax, I saw lots of hiking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing, etc tours that would have been so fun to spend a few days doing! If you’re heading to Antarctica, I highly recommend giving yourself a few extra days in Ushuaia.
