I’ve always been a strong believer that layovers as pass throughs don’t count. But here, as a 19 year old, who didn’t think ahead on time zones and where we were going and what we were doing….. found ourselves in an interesting situation.
Out new best old lady friends showed us off the train and walked us to this hors statue they told us about and all the way into the city center so we’d have a good starting point. We finished our small talk with them and meandered back to the ticket booth to buy our tickets back towards Brno – where we started just a short two days ago. Little did we know we were wasting precious time!
What we found out is that there was only one train that would get us back to Brno on time… and it left in 7 minutes!! We standing in a line with the SLOWEST people ahead of us. We got our tickets and went bolting towards platform 2. There was a train already there and I get to the train and, afraid it’s the wrong one yell to the ticket lady ‘Vienna, yes?” “yes, Vienna” she yells back. We jump onto the train and I’m not exaggerating, it started moving almost instantly.
We’ve gotten smarter as this trip goes on. This time we ASKED where we were allowed to sit. ‘Anywhere’ smiled the ticket checker. Well… that’s a first! Our tickets say Vienna via Villach… does that mean we have a layover? Do we get off the train? Is it the same train we get back on? No idea….
We haven’t showered or changed or slept since Wednesday. So we are dirty, greasy, probably smelly, and look disheveled. Yet we were having the time of our lives with the biggest smiles on our faces! Our ipods are dead and we have no way of charging them either.
